CHAPTER 35

DELMUTHIA SYSTEM 045538404

TWO DUDES, ONE HELL OF A SHIP!

We soared away from the gate at a rapid acceleration. Once we reached a fast-cruising speed, I cut off the acceleration and triggered the cryopod unlock. Danny walked out of the device with a stretch, coming to lean on the back of my pilot’s chair.

“We’re here?”

“Yeah bud, we’re here.”

Danny went silent, ingesting the screens where all the starfighter’s outputs were monitored. Not far from those, navigation plotted a direct route to the nearest shipyard called Delmuthia Boma. Then, on the main screens, thousands of starships soared across the black void. A lot of them headed from the core planets to this gate that connected to the major system hub.

We zoomed by most of them, going almost three times faster than the average hauler. I pulled up a data point about the system for him to glance at.

Delmuthia System 045538404: Established 194,302.332 Astroba years ago. Currently populated over 73 trillion. The blue sun’s time of life is estimated to be 4 billion years. 3 habitable planets, four unhabitable. The system is known for trade, manufacturing, and helium on the uninhabited gas planet furthest from the star.

“Every system pretty much has trade and manufacturing,” I said with indifference. “That means the helium is big here. You need a special kind of ship to ingest raw materials known as huffers.”

“That’s frakking amazing,” Danny said.

“Ah! No,” I said, holding up a finger. “No Battlestar Galactica references. This is the real deal, bro. This is definitely not a - let’s find Earth because we’re defeated by the machines.”

“It’s surreal as fuck,” Danny said with a joyful scoff. “I… thanks.”

“Yeah, on that, we agree.”

He patted the back of my chair and said, “Hey, now that I got you alone, can I talk to you about something?”

“Of course, feel free to strike out with Natasha.”

Danny snickered. “She made it clear, yer friends. But yeah, I gently swung, and it was a free walk without shame.”

“I’m not laying claim to any of them. Honestly, I’m very content about just becoming a retired beach bum with babes and boring work,” I said.

“Except you raced home at record speed for a reason,” Danny said.

I grumbled with a nod. “Caught that, did ya?”

“I’m worried about you.” I chuckled and to my surprise, he repeated, “I’m worried about you.”

“While sweet, don’t be. I… Humanity is fucked but let me tell you something Danny. Humanity isn’t just a sea of people who don’t matter. It’s Trisha, or Carlos. Maybe it’s Marty or Veronica.”

“I like Marty, had a beer with him a couple months back on a… Tuesday, yeah it was taco night at the Goblin Mode,” Danny said.

“I love that bar. That’s kind of my point. To myself, I swore off the governments and the GGA. But in reality, I came back for you. I sorta expected you to piss off Natasha enough to find you back on Earth,” I admitted.

“Nope, I think she’s scared, Darius. She’d never admit it, but the most she smiled was when recording your messages.
